Summarization of the content
Artist website – “Linda Carreiro’s research explores the inextricable relationship of language to the body, revealing tactile qualities of printed text as a reminder of its derivation from the root word texere (meaning tissue or texture). Drawing upon her long-standing interests on the history and display of the anatomical body in dissection culture, and post-structuralist theory, text is conveyed as sensuous, malleable material. These critical and creative examinations have resulted in written publications, as well as solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Employing cut, hand-printed, woven, and reformulated texts, often on delicate rice papers and found surfaces, I draw attention to the body as an active agent in creating and viewing text-based works. I propose this partially through evidencing the physical process by which words are imprinted and formulated, but also by engaging the viewer’s body in an alternate form of reading. The adaptation of words from the flattened page into intricate, paper tapestries, for example, enables language to be engaged as both physical and conceptual material—something embodied, sensate, and shifting with each reader. ” –About page
